This 4 Day Birding Tour is a midweek bird watching/photography experience for casual-, enthusiastic- and fanatical avitourists. It is the ideal destination for couples with different interests. The tour takes you to the Finfoot Lake Reserve at the Vaalkop Dam Nature Reserve where more than 340 bird species are present. The habitats include Acacia woodland, Broadleaved woodland in the west of the reserve, open grassland and sandy shores along the dam shoreline (depending on water level) and well-wooded koppies. Amongst the great bird species to spot here are the African Fish Eagle, Pygmy Kingfisher, Black Eagle, Osprey, African Hawk Eagle, Pale Chanting Goshawk, Cape Penduline Tit, Bluecheeked Bee-eater, Southern Pale Chanting Goshawk, European Bee-eater, Blue-cheeked Bee-eater, Kalahari Scrub-Robin, White-browed Scrub-Robin, Barred Wren-Warbler, Violet-eared Waxbill, Black-faced Waxbill, Green-winged Pytilia, Shaft-tailed Whydah, Long-tailed Paradise-Whydah, Red-billed Oxpecker, Goliath Heron, Black Heron, Great Egret, African Fish-Eagle, Osprey, Yellow-billed Stork, Dideric Cuckoo, Levaillant’s Cuckoo, Marico Sunbird and a variety of waders and terns. Accommodation is in a lodge and includes dinner, bed and breakfast.

Day One

Your transport leaves at 12:00 from Pretoria/Johannesburg and takes you directly to Finfoot Lake Reserve (+- 2hr drive). On arrival you will be checked-in and you’ll have time to relax around the pool area before you depart on a sunset game drive. Dinner will be served when you return to the lodge.

Day Two

Your day starts early with coffee and rusks where-after you will board a barge for a cruise on the dam. You’ll have excellent opportunities to photograph Goliath Heron, Spoonbill, Yellow-billed stork, White-breasted Cormorant, African Darter and Terns amongst other. You return in time for breakfast where-after the rest of the morning is spend around the lodge. In the afternoon you will join a game viewer in search of more species on the Finfoot Lake Reserve. Dinner will be served upon your return.

Day Three

Today you will have an early breakfast where-after you will join the morning trip to the Magalies Waterworks and the Vaalkop Dam area. Amongst the many birds to see are the Three-banded Plover, Wood Sandpiper, Common Moorhen, Dideric Cuckoo, Marico Sunbird, White-bellied Sunbird, Brown-hooded Kingfisher, Lilac-breasted Roller, Lapwings, Dark-capped Bulbul, Firefinches, Egrets, Herons and Bishops. You’ll return to the lodge later the day and spend the rest of the day around the lodge searching for the African Paradise Flycatcher, Levaillant’s Cuckoo and Violet-backed Starling amongst other. Dinner will be served at the restaurant later that evening.

Day Four

Today you will be able to sleep late and wake-up at your own time, however it is an excellent opportunity to photograph the early morning birdlife around the lodge. Enjoy breakfast when you’re ready and enjoy the birdlife around the lodge. You will return to Pretoria/Johannesburg around 11h00.

About Finfoot Lake Reserve

This lodge near Johannesburg is naturally crafted from wood and thatch, perfectly complimenting the surrounding woodlands and foliage. The large thatched lapa serves as the main hub at Finfoot Lake Reserve. This open-sided, breezy building is home to the camp's bar and cosy lounge areas where most meals are served. Descend a few steps out onto the sun deck, where there's plenty of seating to sit back and soak up the view. Your Bird Guides:

Tenika van der Berg is currently senior ranger at Finfoot lake reserve and has been working here for almost 2 years. She is a passionate young lady with a very good knowledge on the birds of Finfoot.

Sarel van der Westhuizen has been working in the bush for the last 18 years, where most of that time as game ranger in 7 of the provinces. He is an avid birder and bird photographer for the last 6 years.
